Last time at Chapter MovieMaker: wow factor

In a slight break from the norm, this screening featured material from both local filmmakers and those based further afield, courtesy of our friends at the Wales One World Film Festival. So, after an appropriately globetrotting intro film, our journey began with The Tyrell Seaman Story from Adam Grierson. Next came Gorelovka, a documentary from Alexander Kviria depicting episodes from the life of the disappearing Doukhobor community. Another group of hardy senior citizens starred in Do The Hand Jive, a music video for The Voluntary Butler Scheme by Ryan Owen. Finally, Philip Cowan offered Reflections on Ethiopia in his documentary. And that's all we had time for. We'll be back with our regular programming on Monday 4th April. Same bat-time, same bat-channel.

In 2010 the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley celebrated its centenary year. On-Par Productions were invited to document the cinema's history through the stories of its staff, patrons and local residents.

After this month's intro raced through Canton, the first-round knockout came from Queensbury Rules, a drama from William Scothern. Everybody stayed to see Sunset, a music video for White Noise Sound from Ryan Owen, followed by his intense drama Sink. Darren J Coles then paid tribute to Cardiff, The Capital with a landscape film about the city. Hasta Los Cojones cried AJ with his music video for a mysterious band with no name. Finally, we watched On Par Productions' documentary about The Phoenix, another beloved cinema, in the comfort of our own beloved cinema.

Last night at Chapter MovieMaker: pop quiz

After a longer-than-usual intro took us through New Year's Eve in Cardiff, we settled in for a snack-sized screening. First up was Autumn Leaves, a short drama from Stephen Hanks. Ellen Waddell then presented a promo for Heat Rash, an upcoming quarterly magazine and music bundle of fun (now taking subscriptions). Finally came Steve Sullivan's The Debt, a comedy about a man with heavy issues. Due to a slight shortage of exhibiting filmmakers to interview, the audience were tested about the films they'd just seen and rewarded with tasty treats. I'm pleased to report they did very well.

Tony is fixated with drills of all shapes and sizes. As we follow him on his search for drills to add to his ever-increasing collection, we slowly unwrap the logic behind this strange and amusing obsession.

Last time at Chapter MovieMaker: literally good films

For starters, we had Candyfloss, a music video for Jonny (aka Euros Childs & Norman Blake) by Ryan Owen. Then came The Wake of an Angel, a carefully-crafted animation by William Charles, followed by a preview of the latest work by Leyla Pope. Next up was Yoyo, a twisted music video from ringmasters Ewan Jones Morris and Casey Raymond for Fujiya and Miyagi. Rob Howells told the touching tale of Luella and Me, then Rhett Evans inspired with Enjoy what you do and never work another day in your life and a pair of spec Doritos ads (here and here). Ben Reed brought his own double feature: Serpents in Solitude, an appropriately grim music video for Funeral for a Friend; and The Magic, a pimped-out promo for Joan As Policewoman. Steve Sullivan treated us to A Bit On The Side, then Ryan Owen returned with Hotel Shampoo, a short documentary about Gruff Rhys' recent installation at Chapter, and ended the evening by reuniting George and Andrew with a Christmassy song by The Boy Least Likely To. Wham!

Last time at Chapter MovieMaker: minor offences

This month's intro, which featured some surprise zombie cameos (the walk-on dead, if you will), was swiftly followed by more educational programming: How To Boil An Egg (Part 1), as instructed by director Ryan Hooper. His namesake Ryan Owen then presented his latest aberrant creation: See My Evil, a music video for Tom Williams and the Boat. Joanna Quinn and Les Mills screened Dreams and Desires: Family Ties, an animated tale of love, cinema and a dirty dog. Next up was Glow, envisioned by Lee Burgess, then Out of Order, a brief encounter with Oliver Milburn. Finally, there was one last job for Detective Policeman, introduced by editor Annette Hauser. Annette and others in attendance that night are featured in the following video from local film blogger Adam Grierson. Look at us, all chatty and articulate:

Last time at Chapter MovieMaker: special guest stars

After this month's intro (an unlikely credit sequence) landed, John Giwa-Amu and Caradog James stepped up and pitched Inside Edge, an upcoming course for first-time feature filmmakers (watch this space for dates etc). Then came two music videos from top-billed Ryan Owen, a.k.a. FilmRyan: Little Girl for Masters in France and River Deep for Tamco. Next, resident globetrotter Malcolm Boorer introduced the first of two documentaries, a surprisingly jaunty primer on land registration initiatives in Benin. Casey Raymond and Ewan Jones Morris went wild with folk duo Smoke Fairies in a Hotel Room, then Malcolm returned with tales of going guerilla when documenting the recent Bolivian elections. Ben Reed got freaky with fruit in Don't Forget Me Now, a video for Mumdance, before Oanis Rawbone ended the screening with an entertaining trip down Whipporwill Lane. We then adjourned to the bar for Shooters In The Pub, a networking initiative from Shooting People.

Last time at Chapter MovieMaker: isolated incidents

This month's intro opened a darker-than-usual film programme, which began with a predatory take on Teddy Bear's Picnic from Marc Ap Anthony. Paul Scoble then screened Day of The Munchies, the unholy offspring of George A. Romero and Buster Keaton. Next came the first real contender for most unfortunate protagonist of the evening: Gabriel as played by Thaer Al-Shayei and directed by Pizzaman's James Robson, though the lead from Rachel Dax and Alun Paget's The Gatekeeper also proved eligible for that title. Tony Hurley treated us to a sneaky preview of Magpie and things started to look up - first with The Bank Loner from Catrin Doyle, then Superstar from arch fashionistas Ewan Jones Morris and Casey Raymond. The evening reached a delirious climax with Love Me Love My Dog, a handy comedy from Matt Mullins and MovieMaker's own Simon Howells.

Dazzled by this month's Inceptionary intro, Jamie Adams declared
I See Stars. Next came some community work: Brain Addiction: An Appeal from Paul Scoble and the undead, followed by Poppy Nicol and the Tree Musketeers. There were obstacles along the way, but Hannah McKimm was able to come Out With Dad eventually. Jon Rennie programmed a double feature about dodgy mentors, with contrasting types depicted in Blank Canvas and The Cursed Mirror. Finally, Ewan Jones Morris and Casey Raymond came to the rescue with Chicken Bones, a heroic music video for John Grant.
